Portwine Stains Treatment

Some people are born with flat reddish formations on their skin, so called “portwine stains”.

Portwine stains are skin areas with dilated vessels. Such vessels cannot contract; they are always turgid (overfilled with blood) and give the skin its characteristic purple color.

There has been no effective means against portwine stains until special dermatological lasers appeared. Today, anyone affected may expect to get rid thoroughly or substantially of his cosmetic defect. Among thousand newborns there are, statistically, three ones with portwine stains. In early age, the portwine stains are flat and typically pink, red or amaranth colored. Most often, they tend to be located on the face and neck, while any other parties of skin or even mucous membranes are not excluded. The portwine stains grow concurrently with the skin development; in the course of time, they deepen in color, thicken, and rise in dark nodules. Portwine stains never pass away by themselves. Changes are always visible on the newborn’s skin, and they rest for life.

Social problems

Portwine stains, particularly when face-located, may lead to emotional, social or economical consequences. The child affected with a facial stain often feel restrained and inferior, his self-esteem lowers. A personality thus formed comes across major difficulties in communication and is subject to psychological depressions. Any society, children’s in particular, more often rejects “different from us” rather than accept her. A portwine-stained person encounters serious obstacles when seeking a well-paid work or quick promotion.

Complications

Every fourth stain located at the forehead, temple or eyelids causes complications such as development of glaucoma (high internal pressure in the eye). In these cases, a high risk of full lost of vision arises. Sometimes, the skin goes thicken at the stained area: near the arm or leg joints, this makes movements difficult, and when based on the cheek this hampers chewing. With age, the surface of portwine stains becomes uneven and rises in dark-red nodules, composed of thickened vessels – so called pyogenic granulomas. Such granulomas are easy subject to traumas, and if so, they are bleeding and difficult to heal. Some portwine stains are components of serious syndromes and witness for some other dangerous disease.

Treatment

The most effective method of treatment of portwine stains is now irradiation by special dermatological pulsed dye laser Sclero Plus (Candela USA). The method was recommended by leading dermatologist associations in USA, Europe, Japan and other advanced countries.

The best results will be assured by the earliest beginning of the treatment – even at a baby age. The extent of the laser intervention depends on the patient particular qualities. Typically, several courses of treatment alternated with two-month intervals are prescribed. The younger the patient, the less quantity of treatment sessions is needed to achieve a cosmetic result.

A substantial fading of the stain is attainable in 90 per cent cases. In rare situations, portwine stains may resist the treatmets.

The procedure is indeed painless, with no need in narcosis or hospitalization.

Makeup preparations are also advisable to hide portwine stains. Using lasers, dermatologists may clear out the affected areas of the skin. Tens of thousands people have already passed laser treatment. They have gained much better physical appearance and now discover new possibilities formerly inaccessible to them.
